How do you rank higher in google searches? Here’s a simple approach

So, how do you get your site to rank higher in google searches? As the title implies, I have a simple approach that work well, all you need to do is focus on your online reputation.

What? Why in the world do you need to focus on your reputation in order to get better search rankings (or to make your rankings worse as others focus on their reputation if you ignore to focus on yours)?

There’s a simple answer for that as well….

Google wants to provide the best, most relevant search results to customers searching for things, like restaurants or service providers. It wants people to constantly use it’s search engine because they get the best results when they search. Why? it all comes down to ad revenue.

See, when more people search with google, there’s more opportunity for them to get paid from advertisers who put their links at the top and sides of the search results. In order to get the greatest number of people using their search, they want to provide the absolute best information they can so people continue to use them.

All that makes sense, right? Well, the reason reputation plays heavily into your search rankings because your business’ reputation is an important aspect into giving people the most accurate, relevant information to make a decision with.

Let’s illustrate this with a scenario.

Let’s say that you’re doing some research and looking for a heating and air company to give your unit a checkup before winter, and long before the cold sets in. So you navigate over to Google and search for “Heating & Air company *your city*” (ok, so you don’t really search on your city, just whatever city you happen to be in) and you see 3 options come up in the ‘local’ search area. Now, these 3 are what google considers the ‘best’ of the options listed in their directory. I don’t know how it is in your town, but usually, these 3 will have their reputation scores listed right near their name. They want to provide as much information as possible so that you have a good, easy buying experience.

Your reputation and reviews are important because it helps google build a ‘full picture’ of what your business is and who you are. Your rankings improve as the number of reviews you get increases and the quality of your reputation score improves.

Even though search engine optimization (SEO) seems straightforward on paper, there are hundreds of interlocking pieces that need to be monitored in practice if you demand positive results.

When it comes to e-commerce sites, the process gets even more complex than usual. In fact, e-commerce sites operate under a unique set of circumstances with a specific set of best practices.

So to make this a reality let’s have a look at some of the more important aspects of SEO for e-commerce, and see if your pages measure up!

Unique content – Don’t make the blunder that most newcomers to e-commerce make when creating their product pages, that is simply copying and pasting an Amazon or other product description they find somewhere onto their pages. This doesn’t sit well with Google, and you won’t rank well. Make unique content for your pages!

Reviews and social proof – Most people are hesitant to purchase if they don’t see that someone has tested the waters before them That is why testimonials and social proof play such a large part in successful e-commerce pages. These are easy to get, and need to be a part of the plan!

Redirect old product pages – When you retire a product and simply ignore it, it still gets traffic and may ultimately lead to a 404 error page, a bad SEO signal to Google. Avoid this by redirecting your old pages to new, more relevant ones.

Use unique imagery – Use unique images on your pages too. Like duplicate content in the form of text, using the same images found on Amazon won’t help you. If you can tackle some image editing, it’s simple enough to alter the images enough to make them unique, and perhaps adding a message of your own.

Use different types of content – Shake it up on your e-commerce pages. Like other web pages, people like to see a variety of content, and this can make your product stand out. Videos, demos and testimonials can help immensely.

Using these small tweaks along with traditional on-page SEO can result in your pages leapfrogging over the competition. All it will require is a little more work!

I’m just like most other entrepreneurs I know – I have at least three new business ideas before I get out of bed in the morning. And the ideas just keep coming throughout the day.
Thankfully, after years of trial and error as an entrepreneur, I’ve learned to evaluate my new ideas carefully to determine if they are actually an opportunity, instead of just an idea.
Even more importantly, I’ve learned to evaluate if it’s a good opportunity for me and the lifestyle I want to create for myself.
I do that evaluation by asking twelve questions that I’ve found are critical to determining if a business is right for me. If I have more than a few ‘No’ responses, I can immediately cross the idea off of my list and forget about it. If it’s all ‘Yes’ responses, I know I have an idea with real potential.
Here’s the list of questions, with some of my thoughts explaining why each is important to me:
Will this business support the lifestyle I want (income, ability to travel, flexible work time, etc.)? I work to live, not live to work. I also love to travel and have flexibility in terms of when I get my work done. That immediately disqualifies many businesses.
Is there proven demand for the product I am going to sell? Creating demand is hard, slow and expensive. I’d rather capture my share of already existing demand.
Is there a clear value proposition that will make my product unique in the marketplace? Business is no fun if I don’t have some sort of competitive edge.
Is there a very clear way to market and sell my product or service through existing channels? Leveraging existing sales channels is the fastest and easiest way I’ve found to get a business off the ground profitably.
Can I leverage online marketing and social media to grow this business? These are two of the most powerful business-building forces of our time; I want to be sure to take advantage of them.
Will this business have gross margins of at least 50% and/or net margins of at least 20%? At the end of the day, a business has to make money.
Can this business become a sellable asset? The big win often comes from being able to sell and exit your business when you are ready, but not all businesses are easy to sell.
Can I automate the majority of the operations of the business? I try to take advantage of as much automation as possible to reduce the overhead of operating a business.
Can I easily find someone to successfully run the business for me? Eventually, I’ll likely want someone to run the business for me. Is this a business that can easily be handed over to someone else, or does it require my specific knowledge and talents?
Is this a business that I’ll find fun and interesting to run today? Yes, life insurance is very profitable, but it’s not fun. Profit is not enough; I want to be in businesses that I actually enjoy.
Is this a business that other people will find fun and interesting? I’ve found that it’s much more enjoyable to be in a business that other people think is fun and interesting.
Is this something I’ll still be willing to run seven years from now? The reality is that most businesses don’t grow as quickly or as profitably as I’d like. If I am still running this seven years from now, will I still find it enjoyable?
Use these twelve questions to evaluate your business ideas. You should be able to answer ‘Yes’ to the far majority of the questions.
If not, drop the idea and be thankful that you didn’t invest your time and energy into something that ultimately wouldn’t fulfill your entrepreneurial dreams.
